With strong links to the sea, we are delighted to announce a year-long mission to raise funds for a charity that helps ex-fishermen and their families, along with a range of other charitable causes.
As you know, Cornish Splice repurposes discarded fishing rope and ghost gear into a range of products including wall-hangings, mats, bowls, keyrings, dog leads and toys.
For the next twelve months, our small family business has nominated the Fishermen’s Mission to be our charity of the year, with a range of initiatives to raise funds.
We will donate 10% of the profit from our range of keyrings made from discarded fishing rope and ghost gear, which includes “Monkey Fists”, “Sprats” and our selection incorporating floats.
Cornish Spliced will also donate at least 10% of our fee to organise and deliver corporate workshops – which are proving to be popular team-building and mental health days.
As well as raising funds for the Fishermen’s Mission, our little family adventure is also proud to support other charities, providing our goodies at a reduced cost to charities so that they can sell them at a profit.
Cornwall Heritage Trust, 2 Minute Beach Clean Foundation, Freddies Friends and Hounds for Heroes/Team Raleigh are just some of the charities already utilising the opportunity, with Cornish Spliced keen to work with more.
We managed to pin ‘Grandad’ down to saying a few words:
“I come from a generations of fishermen. My dad and uncles taught me the skills that I needed – including how to splice. I’m proud to be passing on these heritage skills to my daughters and grandchildren, to help prevent them being lost. I’ve spent a lot of time at sea, so I’m proud that our little family venture has officially nominated The Fishermen’s Mission as our charity of the year as they do so much for fishing families.”
The Fishermen’s Mission helps fishing families on the waves, on the quayside, or in the home, offering practical, financial and emotional support and providing a 24/7 emergency service to assist with accidents or illness at sea.
Julian Waring, Regional Fundraising Manager for the Fishermen’s Mission said:
“On behalf of the Fishermen’s Mission, we’re delighted that Cornish Spliced have chosen us as their “Charity of the Year”. It fits in so well with not only the creative idea of the products but the ideas come from a family steeped in the Cornish fishing heritage.”
Grandad continued: “As a family business, we want Cornish Spliced to support as many charities as possible. One way to do this is to supply our products to them at a reduced cost, to be sold at events, in their high street and web shops, etc. They can then use the profits however they need to. We also give away products for prizes and support charitable initiatives whenever we can.”
From daily beach cleans, through to working directly with fishing boats to salvage end of life rope, we try hard to prevent discarded fishing gear from going to landfill, incineration or re-entering the sea.
We breathes= new life into the materials, repurposing them into beautiful environmentally-conscious lifestyle products, with a past life-story, for those who love Cornwall or feel passionately about the environment and repurposing.
Our story and products, including keyrings, can be found here on our website, including our online shop if you would like to purchase a keyring to support the Fishermen’s Mission.
